Baby Safety and Infant Tagging Systems in Hospitals

A recent episode of the popular daytime BBC soap opera Eastenders has caused quite a controversy. A character on the show, Ronnie Branning, loses her baby to cot death and swaps him for another character's live baby. The episode received backlash for using cot death, also known as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, as a part of the plot. There was also uproar concerning the swap of the live baby for the dead one. These subjects are very sensitive ones, especially for parents of young children.

Cot death and baby kidnapping probably garner such a strong negative response because they are things that parents fear the most-things that seem difficult or impossible to control or stop. When confronted with baby abduction, many parents fear that there is nothing they can do to prevent this tragedy.

There are ways to guard against baby abduction, though. Many hospitals are implementing measures to stop potential kidnappers. Whilst baby kidnapping in hospitals is rare, it is always best to take precautions for the safety of the newborns.

The most important way to protect babies in hospitals is with adequate security. Most hospitals employ a full-time security staff. This staff should be well trained to respond appropriately in an emergency. If the security team is well trained, they may be able to lock down a hospital as soon as a child has been reported missing. Swift action can prevent a would-be baby abductor from leaving the premises. The security staff should be well-versed in handling emergency scenarios, and have plenty of practice in case of a real kidnapping.

Another measure often used in hospitals is a locked nursery. Only people admitted by nursing staff are allowed into the nursery. The doors to the nursery can only be opened with a code known to the nursing staff, or manually from the inside of the nursery. This code should be changed regularly. Locked nursery doors ensure that no strangers have access to newborns in the hospital.

An even more sophisticated method of protecting newborns in the hospital is an armband or tagging system. As soon as a baby is born, these unique tags are put on the newborn's wrist or ankle. The tags usually correspond to the mother's armband. This baby tagging system ensures that no one outside the infant's family can gain access to the baby. A key feature of this infant tagging system is that a corresponding tag is placed on the mother's wrist, so that there can be no mix-up of infants. Sometimes the father or support person is also given an armband corresponding to the baby's tag.

Some hospitals implement an alarm system attached to these baby tags. If an infant is carried out of the nursery, the tag triggers an alarm. This feature of the tag system is important and can easily help prevent baby abduction from the nursery. It triggers an immediate, quick response. Hospitals that have infant tagging systems with alarms are working to ensure the safety of the newborns in their care.

Parents who are concerned about baby abduction should inquire about their hospital's infant tagging system. This system is very beneficial to new parents, giving them peace of mind in the knowledge that their new little one is safe and secure.
