Babies First Visit to Grandma's House - A How to Guide to Preparing Your Home For Baby's First Visit

Expecting a visit from your new grandchild soon? Baby's first visit to Grandma and Grandpas house is a very exciting event. This may be their first visit to your new place or just a long time since you had a "little visitor" in your home. You can prepare for the arrival of your grandchild with a little planning and preparation.

If this is their first trip Mom and Dad are going to welcome all the help they can get. First, find out from them what equipment the baby will need when they stay with you. A crib, car seat, high chair, toys? These items can easily be rented from a local baby equipment rental company or purchased from a consignment or children's store. Just be sure whatever equipment you get meets all the current safety standards and hasn't been recalled. Be careful when borrowing equipment from friends. Safety standards are constantly changing and a piece of equipment that looks good, may not meet current standards. Health Canada posts a list of all children's product recalls online.

A car seat is a crucial piece of equipment these days. Many families bring a seat with them or rent one when they arrive. If you are installing a car seat into your vehicle, read the owner's manual to know where the safest location is for the seat and the location of any child seat anchors. According to Alberta law, it is the driver's responsibility to ensure that passengers under 16 years of age are buckled up correctly. For children under 40 lb (18 kg) or under 6 years of age, they must be in an appropriate child safety seat that is installed correctly into the vehicle. Mom and Dad will have some experience in installing their own car seat too. Allow some extra time at the airport for them to check it over if you have already installed it in your vehicle.

It is also a nice idea to stock some basic baby supplies prior to their arrival. This will really help mom and dad focus on getting there instead of packing their suitcases full of supplies. Diapers, Wipes, and Baby food can all be picked up from your local grocery store. Been a while since you shopped in the baby aisle? Just check with mom to see if baby has any favorite foods, allergies or specific brands they prefer. A few jars of baby food or a package of diapers are a great start! Having a few of these basic baby supplies on hand will really help to make a welcoming environment for your family.

A few days before their arrival you will need to take a look around your home for hazards. Baby-proofing your home requires looking from a baby's vantage point. Janeen Webb co-owner of Safe and Sound Baby Proofing in Calgary says, "With some minor adjustments to your home, you can create a safe place for the baby."

She says that some of the hot spots she sees in Grandparent's homes are bed side tables that have medications in them. An easily accessible bed side table with dangerous medications will need to be relocated. Also, have a look in your closet for any dry-cleaning bags that can pose a suffocation hazard. Any small objects that can become a choking hazard should also be moved (marbles, decorative beads, coins, etc.) Safety gates can be installed at doorways or stairways to prevent fall hazards. Janeen recommends choosing either a permanent or temporary safety gate based on how often the child will be visiting and the location of the gate. Baby Proofers and safety experts operate in most major cities and can provide some excellent advice on how to prepare your home for a visit.

Rhonda Tkachuk, owner of Certified First Aid, teaches parents, grandparents and caregivers the basic life saving skills needed in an emergency through CPR and First Aid courses. She says that the grandparents she teaches are, "so much more comfortable and reassured after taking the course." A lot of the techniques have changed in treating emergencies like a child who is choking. Whether you are taking your first course or a refresher course, you will definitely feel more confident looking after a little one if mom and dad want to sneak out for a night alone.

Looking for fun things to do to keep everyone entertained? Pick up a copy of your local newspaper or Children's magazine. These child friendly magazines can usually be found on newsstands at your local grocery store or library. Inside you will find current listings for child-friendly things to do in your area. Have a few suggestions ready for the family when they arrive. Parents that have just arrived in an unfamiliar city will be grateful that you have researched some entertainment options for them. Having a few children's movies on hand from your local video store can also be a great way to pass the time on a rainy day.

Travel can be stressful for families with a new baby. By preparing for their visit, you can help to make the visit an enjoyable time for everyone!
